The China-Nigeria Gyirong-Rasuwa Port is officially opened to third country nationals, as announced by the Press Office of the People's Government of the Tibetan Autonomous Region at a press conference held on August 30. Besides Chinese and Nepalese, third country nationals can also enter and exit through the Gyirong-Rasuwa Port with valid documents.
The opening of Gyirong Port means that the China-Nepal Highway trip suspended due to the earthquake in Nepal in 2015 will be opened again to tourists from all over the world.
The highway trip from Lhasa to Kathmandu is one of the most popular tourist routes in Tibet. China-Nepal Highway (Sino-Nepal Highway or Friendship Highway) is 943km long from Lhasa to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. It is the only international direct highway in Tibet.
China-Nepal Highway is divided into two branches in Lhatse County. The east branch is from Tingri to Nyalam, and finally arrives at Kathmandu through Zhangmu Port. It used to be the main route of China-Nepal Highway trip. The west branch is from Lhatse to Gyirong Port, and finally arrives at Kathmandu through Gyirong Port.
The China-Nepal Highway starts from Lhasa and passes through Shigatse and Tingri, with a total length of 943km. Along the way, you can not only visit classic scenic spots like Yamdrok Lake, Karora Glacier, Baiju Monastery and Tashilhunpo Monastery, but also walk with Himalayas to the Everest Base Camp to see the top of the world.
After years of efforts in restoration, the reconstruction of infrastructure and supporting facilities at Gyirong Port has been basically completed so far. On June 29, 2017, the China-Nigeria Gyirong-Rasuwa Port was officially opened as an international port. On August 30, the Gyirong-Rasuwa Port was officially opened to third countries other than China and Nepal. The once interrupted highway trip between China and Nepal is opened again to tourists from all over the world.
