Shigatse is the second popular city for Tibet travelers, except for Lhasa, this is one of the places those are must be visited by tourists. The tourism resources of Shigatse are very rich, the snow mountains led by the Everest, beautiful Kaamo Valley, the enhancing snow mountains, lakes, grassland, mysterious and legendary temples, and characteristic culture and custom of gTsang, all of which make tourists fascinated.
The climate of Shigatse is cool and cold, belongs to plateau temperate and semi dry climate, and belongs to plateau temperate and semi moist climate of the Yarlung Zangbo River among the ten climate divisions in Tibet. Shigatse has a dry climate with strong ultraviolet, though the blue sky and white cloud is spectacular, tourists shall pay attention to prevent from sun and keep moist in this relatively harsh climate.
Shigatse has a wide area, so the climate here is quite changeable. If you are preparing for the trip to Tibet, you’d better check the instant local weather or consult us one week ahead of the trip. Below are the characteristics of Shigatse climate all year round.
1.Thin air, low air pressure, few oxygen. Therefore usually we trip to Shigatse from Lhasa at the fourth day after arriving in Lhasa.
2.Strong sunshine radiation, long sunshine hours of average 3300 hours per year, strong plateau ultraviolet. Sunshine prevention caution is needed in the trip.
3.Low air temperature, great diurnal range of air temperature. Whether it is in winter or summer, the temperature under the sunshine in daytime is relatively higher while it is very low once the sun sets. Pay attention to cold protection and Keep warm in morning and evening time.
4.Obvious dry season and rainy season. From October to April of the next year, the weather is dry and windy, cold and few rain and snow, the precipitation is less than 10% of the annual precipitation
The period from March to May is the Spring of Shigatse, also the dry season of Shigatse. In this season, temperature gradually increases along with flowers blossom. Though it is the off-season of Tibet tourism with fewer tourists, the sight view is quite unique. You can enjoy the picturesque view of Mt. Everest more easily in the Everest Base Camp at this moment. Though the Everest Tent Camp is not available, we can still provide accommodation in Rongphu Monastery, where we can enjoy the sunrise and sunset on the World Highest Peak.
Clothing Guide: You can take your clothes according to the altitude of the places you visit. The plus thick down coat for preventing coldness and keeping warm is needed in the journey to the Everest Base Camp. If your destination is the urban area of Shigatse or Gyirong Valley at the border of China and Nepal or such as, the ordinary warm clothes are enough for you to prevent coldness.
Cautions: The tourists who are the first time to visit Tibet shall stay for sometime in Lhasa before traveling to the higher altitude place of Shigatse. If your altitude stress is serious after you arrive in Lhasa, you can apply to go to Nyingchi in Tibet to join the Peach Blossom Festival. The stretches of peach blossoms in Nyingchi look like a spectacular picture.
The period from June to August is the summer of Shigatse, also the rainy season of Shigatse and the busy season of Tibet tourism. In this season, it rains relatively more, with higher oxygen content in air and about 25 Celsius degree of temperature, the ideal time for passing the summer holidays. Yet the ultraviolet of Shigatse in summer season is very strong, tourists shall take sunshine prevention to avoid sun burn. The temperature in the Everest Base Camp at this moment is about 15 Celsius degree, the tent camp is also in business, you can enjoy the grandeur view of Mt. Everest at close distance in the Everest Base Camp. Clothing Guide: The ordinary warm clothes are enough for preventing coldness in the Everest Base Camp while the unlined garments with long sleeves and long trouser legs are enough when visiting Tashilhunpo Monastery and other places in Shigatse.
Cautions: Sunshine prevention is the main protecting measures in visiting Shigatse in summer. Take care of your skin when enjoying the beautiful scenic spots.
The period from September to November is the Autumn of Shigatse, this is the most ideal time for traveling in Shigatse except for Summer. It is reflecting incisively and vividly that the air of Shigatse in Autumn is very fresh and comfortable. The sky of Shigatse is more bright after rainy season, so we can view the glittering crest of Mt. Everest more easily in the Everest Base Camp. And with fewer tourists after the busy season of traveling, we can have a better experience of the plateau ecology in Tibet.
The temperature of Shigatse in Winter and the cautions in Winter The period from December to February of next year is the winter season of Shigatse. It is cold in Winter of Shigatse with great temperature difference between daytime and evening time, the temperature can be minus 20 Celsius Degree in the evening while it is warm with up to 15 Celsius Degree in daytime. Shigatse in Winter is relatively quiet with few tourists.
Clothing Guide: The thick warm down coat, warm hat, scarf and gloves for coldness prevention are necessary. The most important issue of traveling Shigatse in Winter is keeping warm.
