Shigatse Heping Airport is located in Jiangdang township in Shigatse of Tibet Autonomous Region, the altitude is 3,782 meters, the world 8th highest airport. The airport was commissioned in 1973 and rebuilt in April, 2009, was the fifth civil airport in Tibet. Shigatse Heping Airport, together with Lhasa Gongga Airport, Nyingchi Mainling Airport, Bangda Airport in Qamdo and Ngari Kunsha Airport, constitute the airline operation network of Tibet.
Shigatse Heping Airport is located in Jiangdang township of Shigatse, 50 KM away from urban area of Shigatse. Shigatse Heping Airport, same as Lhasa Gongga Airport and Nyingchi Mainling Airport, is located in the valley of Yarlung Zangbo River, the terrain is relatively open and conducive to the airport construction.
Shigatse Heping Airport is adjacent to No.318 national road, on the road of which to Shigatse and Ngari you will pass by Shigatse Heping Airport.
The altitude of Shigatse Heping Airport is 3,782meters, higher than the altitude of Lhasa Airport, where it is more easy to trigger altitude stress. There are two roads options for going from Shigatse Airport to the urban area of Shgatse: No.318 national road and airport dedicated highway.
Shigatse Airport is adjacent to No.318 national road, which is the only road connecting Shigatse airport and urban area of Shigatse before the commission of airport dedicated highway. Also 318national road is the only way which must be passed to the Everest Base Camp, so if your only destination of Tibet tour is the Everest Base Camp, you can choose to fly to Shigatse airport and then travel to the Everest Base Camp along the 318 national road.
On Sep 15th, 2017, the airport dedicated highway from Shigatse airport to Shigatse urban area was commissioned formally. Tourists can get to the scenic spots in Shigatse urban area such as Tashilhunpo Monastery more quickly.
