The snow-capped mountains and rivers and lakes in Tibet are rather important in local religions. Therefore, worshipping to the mountains and lakes in Tibet has become the most common activity in this holy area. Tibet has a large amount of mountains and lakes because of its high location. And among the numerous mountains, Mount Kailash located in Ngari Area is the most important for Tibetans, so the amount of pilgrims to this mountain is also the largest. Not far away from Mount Kailash lies the purest lake in China - Lake Manasarovar, which is one of the three holy lakes in Tibet (together with Namtso Lake and YamdrokTso Lake).
Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar are located on both sides of the 219 National Road in Purang County, Ngari Area. Mount Kailash is located on the north side of the 219 National Road. Lake Manasarovar is on the south side of the road, together with Lhanag-tso Lake. On the south side of Lake Manasarovar stands another snow-capped mountain - Gurla Mandhata (or Memo Nani). With Mount Kailash on the north side and Gurla Mandhata on the south side, Lake Manasarovar stays quietly under the sky.
Ngari Area has little rainfall throughout the year, but it snows heavily in winter (November - the next March). Therefore, winter is not a suitable season for sightseeing and trekking because of the inconvenient traffic. Tourists are suggested to go there in other seasons.
