Nepal and Tibet share the gorgeous scenery of Mount Everest. They both set up Everest base camps near Mount Everest. One is the base camp on the southern slope of Everest in Nepal, and the others are the base camp on the northern slope of Everest and the base camp on the eastern slope of Everest in Tibet, China. This passage introduces how to view the whole picture of the Everest at a close distance from Nepal to the base camp of the north slope of Everest (hereinafter referred to as the “Everest base camp”).
Everest is the boundary between China and Nepal. The straight-line distance(160km.), from Karthmandu, the capital of Nepal, to Everest base camp, is less than that from Lhasa Tibet to Everest Base Camp(450km). Therefore, many foreign visitors who want to go to Everest base, can choose to set out from Nepal to view the whole picture of the Everest at a close distance.
Visitors need to go through China’s Jilong port from Karthmandu to Everest base camp, then they reach Dingri County, Shigatse City along China-Nepal highway before leaving for Everest base camp. The journey is divided into two parts. One is from Karthmandu to China’s Jilong port whose distance is 120km., which takes 2 to 4 hours’ drive. The other is from Jilong port to Everest base camp whose distance is about 400km., which takes one day’s drive.
Notes: Because the road near Zhangmu Port is damaged seriously in the Nepal’s earthquake, so which is still closed for renovation. And the opening hours is to be determined. Jilong port was officially resumed as an open port to third countries on August 30, 2017, so the foreign visitors can begin your trip to Tibet from Karthmandu. Necessary certificates refer to that of Everest base camp.
It takes 3 days to go to Everest base camp from Nepal's Karthmandu for one way.
The first day: From Karthmandu to China’s Jilong port, whose whole journey is 120 km. The road is rugged, which takes a 2-4 hours’ drive. The visitors can appreciate high mountains, canons, forests and rivers along the journey.
The second day: From Jilong port to Dingri County, whose whole journey is 350 km, which takes a 6 hours’ drive. The visitors can appreciate the snowy plateau of Tibet , canons, rivers, high mountains and Haizi along the journey.
The third day: From Dingri County to Everest base camp, whose whole journey is 120 km, which takes a 2 hours’ drive to reach. Then we reach Rongbuk Monastery area of Everest base camp along the asphalt Everest road.
Visitors can choose return to Dingri County at the same day when getting to Everest base camp area, then they decide to travel to Lhasa or return to Karthmandu. Also, visitors choose to stay overnight at an altitude of 5000-meter Everest where they appreciate stunning Everest sunset and sunrise. And then we return to Dingri County.
After returning to Dingri County, visitors can join our journey from Karthmandu to Lhasa. We leave Dingri County for Lhasa, the holy city, during which we go past Shigatse and Yamzhog.
The first one is from Karthmandu to Tibet via Jilong port, then you go to visit the base camp, next you go to visit Lhasa, Ali and other tourist attraction in Tebet. Its advantages are that you can experience the natural landscape and human landscape in Tibet, and you don’t need to backtrack. Its disadvantages are long-time drive, which is a great torment for altitude-sickness and carsick visitors.
Another one is that you can fly to Lhasa from Karthmandu, then you begin the journey from Lhasa to Everest base camp. You can also choose to take the railway or plane to reach Shigatse before leaving for the base camp. In this way, your journey is much shorter, namely, reducing your journey time. And you will put more time into the most important scenic spots. Its disadvantages are that you will miss some scenery along the journey and national customs.
The whole-journey altitude is low whose average altitude is about 2300 meters, from Karthmandu to Jilong port. Although the mountain path is rough and rugged, and there are many the bends along the journey, there are rich vegetation and scenic valleys. So it’s completely unnecessary to worry about the altitude reaction striking suddenly. After crossing the Jilong port and entering Tibet, the altitude will rising gradually, which will rise to 5200 meters from 2500 meters during 400-kilometer journey to Everest base camp. Although the altitude rise is large, the rise is gentle. If you worry about the sudden strike of altitude reaction, you can divide the journey into a few days from Jilong port to Everest base camp. Then you can make more rest and adjustment at each altitude rising point. In this way, after adapting a few days, and then you will not have any trouble when reaching Everest base camp.
