Introduction to the Attractions in Nyingchi

Nyingchi is located in the southeast part of Tibet, enjoying the natural gift brought by Nyang River and Yarlung Zangbo River. The climate here is humid, and the weather here is similar to that of Jiangnan (the south of Yangtse River, meaning “fertile land”) , so Nyingchi is called as “Jiangnan of Tibet”. The scenery of the snow-capped mountains here is just like that of Switzerland, therefore, Nyingchi is also called “the Eastern Switzerland”.

Nyingchi is rich in tourism resources. In addition to the famous Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival, there are many places worth visiting in Nyingchi. The followings are the classic tourists attractions in Nyingchi.

Basum-tso Lake: Basum-tso Lake is famous for its greenish-blue water, which is not the same as that of other lakes in Tibet. If you have the chance to go to Basum-tso Lake, you mustn't miss the chance to cruise on the lake, and you will be impressed a lot by its primitive beauty and tranquility.

Lulang Forest: Lulang Forest is a mountain meadow located in Lulang Town, with an altitude of 3,700 meters. It consists of vast plants and lush vegetation, stretching 15km from east to west and 1km from north to south. The scenery of Lulang Forest in summer is the most beautiful throughout the year. When it is rainy, the forest looks just like a misty fairyland. When there is strong sunshine, the forest will be a wonderful resort. If you go to Tibet via the 318 National Road, Lulang Forest is one of the places you can’t missed.

Midui Glacier: Midui Glacier is one of the attractions that can be easily enjoyed along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway and Yunnan-Tibet Highway. Midui Glacier was voted as one of the “Six Most Beautiful Glaciers in China” in 2005 for its diverse forms and magnificent shapes of glaciers. You will forget all the upsetting things about your work and daily life once you have seen the pure glacier.

Ranwu Lake: Ranwu Lake is located in Ranwu Town in Chamdo Prefecture, about 127 km from Bomi County. The lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. When the weather is sunny, you can see reflections of the mountains from surface of the lake. Coupled with the blue sky and white clouds, the whole scenery looks just like a harmonious picture. Source of the water is ice and snow from the mountains and glaciers around. Therefore, the water will be turbid in rainy days, and the scenery of the lake in winter is the most beautiful.

Namjagbarwa Peak: Reputed as “heaven in the clouds ”, the sky-scraping Namjagbarwa Peak was voted as “The Most Beautiful Snow Mountain in China” in 2005. The peak often hides behind the clouds, so it is not an easy thing to have a look at the majestic Namjagbarwa Peak.

The best place where you can see the peak is the viewing platform on the Sejila Mountain Pass. Yet we still can’t guarantee that you can see the peak even in the day when the weather is fine, as the peak might be blocked by drifting clouds. To take a better photos of Namjagbarwa Peak from the viewing platform, we suggest that you bring professional equipment such as a telephoto lens in advance.

Suosong Village and Zhibai Village in the valley of Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon are also good choices to reveal the true face of Namjagbarwa Peak. The best time to visit Namjagbarwa Peak is April, October and November. And we suggest you to go to the two villages in spring, when there is little rainfall and the whole Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon will be decorated with pink peach blossoms.

Nyang River Scenic Belt: It is the rich water resource of Nyang River that breeds the land of Nyingchi, making this place the most fertile in Tibet. Local people will plant wheat and barley in the flat area of Nyang River valley. In spring, the valley will be decorated with pink peach blossoms. In autumn, the valley will be covered with golden barley and ginkgo leaves. Although you need to wear thick thermal clothes when you travel to Tibet, you can still prepare some beautiful clothes for taking photos in Nyingchi, as the weather here is relatively warm.

Mila Mountain Pass:Located at an altitude of 5,013 meters, Mila Mountain Pass is the highest point along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway and Yunnan-Tibet Highway. It also forms the watershed between Lhasa River and Nyang River. Therefore, once you get to Mila Mountain Pass, it means that you are not far away from Lhasa. Go downhill all the way from the mountain pass, you can get to Lhasa River valley quickly and finally arrive at Lhasa. People are more likely to get altitude sickness here because of the high altitude. However, many tourists will still get off the car or bus to experience the feeling of standing on a place which is 5,000 meters above sea level. As long as you slow down your movement and don’t do strenuous exercise, it would be fine to stay for a short while in such a high place. A wide-angle lens will be of great use here, with which you can take pictures of the whole view of this snowy land.
